Port Gibson – “A Town Too Beautiful to Burn”

“The Town Too Beautiful to Burn” – General Ulysses S. Grant

As the communities supporting the Natchez Trace Parkway, we would like to welcome our newest member, Port Gibson, located in Claiborne County, MS. Established between the Mississippi River and the Big Black River, Claiborne County is located 44 minutes away from Vicksburg and 57 minutes away from Natchez.

Visit the first historically black land-grant institution in the United States – Alcorn State University – and explore its connections with Patton’s Grocery, the first “brick and mortar” store established in 1970.

For a bit of history, visit the Grand Gulf Military Park, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes Fort Cobun and Fort Wade, the Grand Gulf Cemetery, a museum with artifacts from the Civil War to the 1950s, picnic areas, hiking trails, an observation tower, and many restored buildings that were part of the Civil War. This is a unique place to camp out and be surrounded by history. Just make sure to make your camp reservations beforehand.

After a day of exploring rest up at Isabella Bed & Breakfast – an 1880 Queen Anne home located on the Blues Trails.

Finally, if you want the full Natchez Trace Parkway experience, visit Rocky Springs. With 22-site campgrounds, hiking trails, the Owens Creek Waterfall, and exploration of the old town’s Rocky Springs.  This is a great place for a great adventure!
