They called it Muscle Shoals. Earliest history noted the thunderous stretch of shallow rapids where the Tennessee River flowed through the hills and valleys of northwest Alabama. Mussels were found in abundance among the river rocks and American Indians used “much muscle” to power their canoes through the swift waters. They called the place “Muscle Shoals.”
Today the treacherous waters have been stilled and the area is home to four towns as diverse in character as the attractions and amenities they offer. Come visit Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, Sheffield and Florence, collectively called “The Shoals.”
