Rainwater Observatory in French Camp Mississippi will be offering a free public program for this Spring season called “GRAVITY: FALLING OBJECTS AND SMASHING SPHERES!” This presentation will be given on Friday, March 8, 2013, starting at 7:00 p.m. by Dr. John Frassinelli.
Gravity has been called the “glue of the universe.” Gravitational fields hold solar systems, stars, and entire galaxies together. This fascinating presentation will take a look at gravity, some of the scientists who’ve studied it, some of their findings, and some of the ways it affects us. It has been said that “gravity always wins.” It is geared for all ages so come experience an evening of “gravitas” at Rainwater!
Dr. Frassinelli is an excellent speaker and has been a classroom teacher for over 30 years. He has taught a variety of science courses to K-12 students during that time. He has also offered many hands-on workshops at Rainwater Observatory since 1997, and is a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the American Chemical Society. His research interests include thermodynamics, discrepant events and learning, and hands-on chemistry and physics projects for boys and girls. He has published articles in “The Science Teacher” and “Memphis Magazine,” and has been featured in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. He presently teaches science at Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tennessee.
After the presentation, weather permitting, an observing session will be held using Rainwater’s collection of powerful telescopes including the largest in Mississippi. The planetarium can be used if the outdoor observing is clouded out. Rainwater Observatory and Planetarium is located one mile east of the beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway off MS Highway 413 near the village of French Camp in Mississippi.
